Bio

Judit Kurtág was born in Budapest. She grew up in France before spending several years in Amsterdam and Berlin. She is now based in Geneva.

As a visual artist, Judit Kurtág's body of work is multi-faceted from photography and video, to more recently, texts, drawings and paintings. She addresses the issues of perception, of the invisible, of the unspeakable, of time-space, of disorientation and poly-iconia, a concept coined by her in reference to music. From the complexity of her videos to the minimalistic gestures of her drawings, sensuality and poetry expresses the relationship of language to image, of memory to narrative and to imaginary space. The essence of all her work is the variation on the appearance of what she expresses as choreographic matter.

Following graduation in advertising photography from the Ecole des Gobelins in Paris, Judit Kurtág received the DNSEP (equivalent to Master of Arts degree) with honors from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. At the end of her studies, the international artists residency Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam awarded her a two-year scholarship to develop her work.

Judit Kurtág has exhibited throughout the world, notably the Ludwig Museum (Budapest), the Artists Space (New York), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and Tate Modern (London). Her videos have been shown in many festivals such as the International Film Festival of Rotterdam.
